Free Download: West Georgia Aging Resource Guide

A 20-page guide written by Front Porch of Bowdon, Aging Handbook: A Family Guide to Supporting an Aging Parent, for adult children who are noticing changes in an aging parent and are not sure what to do next. It will not tell you what decision to make. It will help you understand what you are seeing, how to talk about it, and what your options actually are.

What is inside:

  • A self-assessment worksheet: which signs mean your parent may need more support now
  • Word-for-word conversation starters for the talk most families keep putting off
  • Plain-English cost ranges for every type of care, from in-home help to dementia care ($1,500 to $10,000+ per month depending on the level of support)
  • What Medicare actually covers for long-term care, and what it does not (most families are surprised)
  • A sibling coordination guide for when everyone has a different opinion
  • A legal and financial planning checklist: Power of Attorney, Advance Directive, HIPAA release, and more

Senior Care Glossary

Senior care comes with a lot of terms. Here are the ones you’ll encounter most often, explained plainly.

Assisted living provides housing, meals, personal care, and supervision for seniors who need help with daily activities but don’t require around-the-clock medical care. Skilled nursing (nursing homes) provide 24/7 medical care for individuals with complex medical needs. Assisted living is typically less expensive and more home-like.
A legal business structure -- available in Georgia since 2021 -- that requires directors to balance profit with a defined public benefit purpose. Unlike a traditional corporation (which must prioritize shareholder returns) or a nonprofit (which cannot distribute profits), a Benefit Corporation can operate for financial sustainability while being legally bound to pursue its social mission. Front Porch of Bowdon is organized as a Georgia Benefit Corporation, making the care mission legally enforceable -- not just a marketing statement.
Many facilities charge different rates based on the level of assistance a resident needs, called “levels of care.” As needs increase, monthly fees increase. Front Porch of Bowdon does not use this model. One rate covers all levels.
In Georgia, “Personal Care Home” is the official licensing category for what most people call assisted living facilities. Front Porch of Bowdon is licensed by the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) as a Personal Care Home.
ADLs refer to routine daily tasks: bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring (moving from bed to chair), and continence management. Assisted living communities assess residents’ ability to perform ADLs to understand care needs.
A type of insurance purchased in advance (often in one’s 50s or 60s) that pays for long-term care needs including assisted living, dementia care, and home care. Most policies have a waiting period (elimination period) before benefits begin. We accept most major LTCi carriers.
A pension benefit from the Department of Veterans Affairs that provides additional income for veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily living activities. It is one of the least-known but most valuable benefits available to qualifying veterans. Ask us about it.
